I have to share my 1st encounters with Jane and how she has influenced me
without knowing it.
About 5 or 6 years ago, Jane was at the Equine Affaire. Totally unplanned I
happened to walk in on her lecture as it was beginning. It was her inspirational
lecture in one of the small class rooms. I was so impressed by her words
especially about negative verses positive thoughts that I started writing notes
on my program as I did not have note paper. I began seeing my whole situation at
my job and my life differently. I knew I could survive and even thrive but I had
to change things. She then had a dressage session immediately to follow. As I
had no time to hunt down more paper to take notes, I frantically grabbed a roll
of paper towels from the bathroom en route. I did not want to miss a single
thing she had to say. I was going to start riding my horses again no matter how
busy my life was. (As I sit here now and write, I look over at my paper towel
roll and chuckle. It has been my home riding program for 5 years). She started
off with exercises to supple and I devoured the information and wrote it down on
my paper towel ,in pencil no less. She went on to collection, half halts,
shoulder-in, straightness exercises. I watched and I wrote....the roll became a
scroll. I took it home and started working with my mare, Destiny. We worked on
straightness and I felt her rhythm. It was rewarding to feel her supple up. I am
awaiting the day that I can get the time to take dressage lessons and learn with
her. Until that opportunity, I will stick with the basics from my roll of paper
towel.
Top Five Runners Up in Happy Horse Contest…
1. Hi Ruth! Here's my essay:
I bought a second horse in October of 2007 as an eventing prospect. She
shipped for three days and when she got off the trailer, she was three
legged lame. Her farrier bills, coupled with x-rays of her seriously
resected hoof all due to a huge abscess, has all but tanked my formal
dressage education with my primary horse, Ikon. With Freckles still on
the mend and ultimately for sale again to ease the financial burden,
Ikon is my foreseeable future. He's made huge advances with his
dressage since my friend gave him to me as a trail horse last June. Our
first show is going to be the weekend of June 14th and I'd like every
opportunity to help him get in showing condition, mentally and
physically, so I can start competing again after losing my event horse.
Switching my primary focus to dressage has allowed Ikon and me to come
really far in the past few months, and I have high hopes for us this
year, with our goal being to place in the top three at the Region 6
championships for First Level. Please give me the chance to use every
tool available to reach our goal. With this program I can continue to
advance with Ikon and not have to foot the bill of a trainer physically
being there. Thanks for considering me.
2. I, Paco (a.k.a. Taco), would like to tell you about my Mom. We're best
friends and we've just started dancing together. I especially like to tango and
Mom likes the rumba. Sometimes we step on each other's toes. I know that Jane
knows how to speak Friesian and I think she can help Mom learn to speak Lusitano.
Thanks,
3. The adult learning process is comprised of “hearing, seeing and then
doing”. The “seeing” part is missing from my training. Watching Jane’s sessions
repeatedly would show me how to communicate with Bugsie, helping my riding mind
and body to implement my training, resulting in a happier, more relaxed
partnership.
Wow, 50 words isn’t very long…..
Thanks for considering my entry!
4. I would like to win Jane Savoie's Happy Horse home study course because
my 15 year old Daughter, who is the "horse" person in the family, will be going
off to places unknown soon. Our poor horses will be left with me, an old lady
who loves them to death but doesn't even claim to know the first thing about
Dressage or training.
I am at the point in my life where I have finally figured out what I want
to be when I grow up and I am ready to take the serious step up from "backyard"
horsemanship to the real thing.
Winning Ms. Savoie's Happy Horse home study course (and a lot of hard work)
would start me on my way to attain this dream, and of course would be the best
thing for our horses.
5. Taking a Jane Savoie course would help me be the rider my green horse
deserves. Last spring, I was introduced to dressage, after riding
hunt-seat for many years. My 13-year-old off-track gelding learns very
quickly. This course would help me be less likely to teach him the wrong
things.
